Monday morning Maestral musings

June 19, 2023

I still use Dropbox to sync a lot of files. 8825 of them, at the moment. Most of them are small markdown files, most importantly all my notes and the contents of this website. Moving to some other sync service would probably not be nearly as much trouble as I imagine it would be, but as long as nothing changes dramatically I am in no rush to find an alternative.

However, I have not been using Dropbox' own Mac client for a while now. Judging by podcast show notes - what a great way they are to track things - I made the switch to Maestral somewhere in November of 2021. The main feature of Maestral is that it only does what Dropbox used to do: keep files in sync and stay out of the way. It looks good and works well, thumbs up all round.

Recently though, things have become a little bit shaky. I have started noticing daily notes in particular not appearing everywhere they should. What I have discovered, eventually, is that Maestral has quietly crashed on some machine. Relaunching fortunately gets everything back in sync in short order, so what annoys me is mostly that I never see it happening (or get any kind of information from the system when it does). I will just wonder why a text is not showing up, glance at the menu bar and eventually notice the Maestral icon is not showing up.

The great thing is that Maestral is open source and has an active issue tracker on Github. There is an open issue with ongoing discussion. All of a sudden I went from slightly annoyed to happy other people are in the same situation and that we can all work toward solving the issue.

Speaking of annoying, why did the fan in my monitor just start running? Guess somebody else needs a restart … If only it too had open source and good issue tracking … and perhaps even a power button so I would not need to yank the power cable …
