Running deltas

June 07, 2023

Sometimes a run - or any other repeated activity - is elevated from good to great simply by being such a big difference from the last time I did it. Last time was a classic case of lumbering along, feeling kind of slow and tired and kind of worn out all at once. Telling myself "oh well, perhaps is as good as it will get from now on", and almost believing it.

Fortunately, a much better run is rarely far off, helped a great deal by how little it takes to be that much better. Tonight's run was not enormously faster, but every single step felt a little bit lighter, stronger, faster than every single step of my last run.

It was not my fastest run of this relatively slow year, either. But that delta from the last run made the overall feeling perhaps the very best of the year.

With a bit of luck, that extra little bit of pushing will lead to a little bit more energy to push just a little bit more next time too.

Or perhaps the time after the next, let us be realistic here. No peaks without valleys.

I am trying to absorb more little bits of WWDC here and there, but I am not finding much time for it. It is all a good reminder of how much good it does to attend conferences once in a while. Meeting all the great people, and also simply being immersed in the experience without any regular activities going on at the same time. That luxury of focus.
